Why your small business needs its own website in 2026
Social media profiles are rented ground. A website you own is the only online asset that keeps working for you — and the only one AI search can properly cite.
Most small businesses start online with a Facebook page or an Instagram account. That is a reasonable first step — but it is rented ground. The platform decides who sees your posts, changes the rules without warning, and can suspend the account entirely.
A website is the asset you actually own
Your own domain and site is the one place where you set the rules. It is also the only version of your business that search engines and AI assistants can read, quote and recommend with confidence.
AI search changed the stakes
When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for “a web designer in Vienna”, the answer is assembled from sources those systems can read and trust. A clear, well-structured website makes you quotable. A social profile behind a login does not.
What “well structured” means in practice
- A clear description of what you do, in the words your customers actually use
- Real contact details and pricing, not “message me for a quote”
- Fast loading and correct heading structure so machines can parse it
- Content that answers the questions people genuinely ask
That is the foundation. Everything else — rankings, referrals, campaigns — builds on top of it.
